Since the hundreds of campers have left the area the dunes are regenerating. A large stretch of sand north of the beach is an example where in five years the sand hills are building and the sea swept maram grass and spinnifex buried in the sand, are growing. Five years ago this north area was barren; hills are appearing and the grasses are growing. There is now a board walk across the dunes to the beach and since the board walk was built two years ago the maram grass has spread toward the sea, 4 to 5 metres. The covenants of Shoal beach forbid any motorbikes, vehicles or camping in the dunes or common ground.
Barren paddocks and camp areas are now planted with thousands of native plants and trees.
